Downtown Newark “Walked for the Health of It!” ran for its seventh consecutive year. More residents and commuters are looking for ways to stay healthy while taking advantage of downtown Newark’s walkable environment, and the NDD Walking Club provides both physical and mental health benefits. Walkers regularly see improvements in mood, attitude, blood pressure, resting heart rate, body fat, BMI percentages, and lung function. While reaping the benefits of exercise and healthy-living consultation, walkers also enjoy the warmth and friendliness of the downtown community. From May to October in their bright yellow “NDD Walking Club” t-shirts, over 25 commuters and residents joined the club and walked, lunged, and worked their core in and around PSE&G Plaza daily. After completing three walks, attendees receive NDD Walking Club backpacks, water bottles, and t-shirts, as well as their first and second 50,000 step award pins! An end-of-season lunch is held to congratulate walkers on their consistency and consciousness of health and wellness. Gift card awards are presented for the most steps, weight-loss, goals reached, and attendance.
The NDD Walking Club is a free and friendly walking group open to all. With four walks a day, the Walking Club is an excellent way to explore the City, meet new people, get your heart pumping and start to live healthier. Whether part of the workforce, a resident, or an interested visitor, all are welcome and encouraged to join our crew, led by Brandi Coleman, a Certified Personal Trainer and accompanied by one of our own NDD Ambassadors! The walks incorporate light upper body and cardio exercises throughout to increase your fitness level and keep you motivated.
