Newark Downtown District Leverages Federal Funds to Plant More Street Trees in the District

That is why the NDD was able to secure a grant through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, coordinated through the New Jersey Tree Foundation, which funded an additional 22 trees that strategically add to the mix.

The NDD is welcoming four new species of trees—Black Gum, Little Leaf Linden, Trident Maple, and European Hornbeam. Some of the tree species are already in the District, but were not abundant on the streets where they were planted—University Avenue, Washington Place, and Central Avenue.

Flowers from New York City show get second home in Newark park

The Newark Downtown District, a nonprofit, hired the moving company to transport 300 grow bags from Fifth Avenue Association’s flower show in New York City. The show, called Fifth Avenue Blooms, featured more than 7,000 flowers along 12 city blocks.

The flowers’ second home will be inside the iconic sword that lays in front of the Wars of America statue inside the park. The sword’s imprint is most notable from an aerial view, like the Newark Downtown District’s office space on Park Place or high-rise apartment buildings such as One Theater Square.

Newark Downtown District Launches ‘From the Heart’ Program to Help Feed City’s Hungry

Since the program’s inception, the NDD has raised enough funds to directly deliver several hundred meals, prepared by Newark-based restaurants. The NDD reaches out to partners around the city for tax-deductible donations, and donors are eager to support local restaurants who are otherwise struggling. With the average cost per meal at $10, 100% of donations are immediately spent at neighborhood eateries to ensure meals are bought and delivered without haste to those who need them.

With an original footprint of 56 city blocks, the NDD grew to 110 blocks in 2013 and now covers the area between NJ Transit’s Broad Street Station and City Hall. Over the years, the NDD has created its own strong brand, with its yellow-clad Ambassadors cleaning the streets daily and program organizers continually finding new ways to inject vibrancy and excitement into the commercial district, expanding shopping beyond “Broad & Market” to Newark’s other small businesses that offer a variety of unique items, services, and cuisine.
