Summer in Newark

While we’re sure you’d love to be somewhere in the tropics enjoying the sand and the sun, downtown Newark isn’t too bad of a place to be as the weather warms up. The city offers many activities, events, and places for you to make the most of. Here are some tips to make summertime in downtown Newark one to enjoy and remember.

Enjoy our outdoor seating and new parklets:

On Market and Mulberry, you can find our outdoor seating area, filled with colorful chairs and big umbrellas to keep you cool while enjoying lunch or charging your phone at our charging station. Just a couple blocks away on Halsey Street, in front of Teachers Village and across the street from Toni’s Minis, is the Newark Downtown District’s very first parklet. In March, our urban planners held a two-day class for 7th and 8th graders to teach them the essentials of urban city living. In the first class, they discussed the importance of streets and sidewalks, the difference between commercial, industrial, and residential buildings, the need for various forms of transportation, and of course – the benefits of city parklets. On the second day, the students were ready to design their very own parklet layout! They were broken up into teams, and at the end of the day, one design was chosen to be made into reality.

You can find another mini-parklet in front of Stars Cafe on Commerce Street. These are for your enjoyment! Being such a busy city, seating areas are just one way to ease the sometimes hectic and overwhelming lifestyle. Have a seat, take a breather, enjoy lunch, coffee, and the sounds of the city.

Register for our Walking Club:

Become a part of the crew! If you haven’t already heard, the NDD Walking Club is back for another year. With four walks a day, the Walking Club is an excellent way to explore the city, meet new people, get your heart pumping, and start to live healthier. The walks welcome all fitness levels, including light upper body and cardio exercises. The NDD made getting fit accessible to everyone with a “stationary walk” located outside of PSE&G Plaza. Between 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm, each day, the NDD’s certified personal trainer, Brandi Coleman, holds an in-place workout where attendees can work out at their own pace, and get the same health benefits of the traditional walks. Three other walking times that take people throughout the vibrant downtown are available.

The 2017 NDD Walking Club schedule:

11:30 am – 12:00 pm

12:15 pm –  1:00 pm

1:00 pm – 1:30 pm (stationary walk)

1:30 pm – 2:00pm

Registration can be found here. All walks start at PSE&G Plaza, 80 Park Place, Newark, NJ.

Stop by our Farmers Market:

The largest Farmers Market in Newark is back for its 17th season! Our market offers everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, gourmet dried fruits and nuts, and delicious empanadas to homemade body lotion and soap, artisan made jewelry, and exclusive apparel. Bring your friends and family every Thursday from June 1st to October 26th (weather permitting), between 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

The NDD Common Greens Farmers Market accepts SNAP, WIC, and Senior Citizen Program Vouchers, and is within the Nourishing Newark Farmers Markets network.

Take a stroll around our Pedestrian Mall:

After a very successful pilot program last year, the Newark Downtown District announces June 6th as our pedestrian mall’s 2017 debut. Located on Halsey Street, between Raymond Boulevard and Academy Street, the NDD closes the street to lay out tables and chairs and create a welcoming space for you! The pedestrian mall will be held every Tuesday from June 6th to October 10th, between 11:30 am and 3:00 pm. This year, retailers are holding store offers specifically for those who are enjoying the space.

Visit the NDD kiosk located in the center of the pedestrian mall to pick up your offers flyer and enjoy nearby sales and specials.
