On November 27th, 2017, the Newark Downtown District (NDD) and the New Jersey Devils jump started into the holidays with the 4th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting at the Prudential Center’s Championship Plaza. This year’s celebration featured the male quartet, TruSoL, representing North Jersey and adding soul to the holiday celebration.
Attendees of all ages enjoyed dancing with popular children’s characters like Olaf and Moana, taking pictures with Santa, and singing along with Victorian carolers, soul band TruSoL, Roberto Clemente’s school choir, and DJ Sir William. The plaza was filled with numerous carnival games, a bouncy house, a trackless train, and a street hockey rink along with partners like the YMCA and Whole Foods who brought games, holiday-themed arts and crafts, and complimentary hot beverages to keep our attendees warm. Still, the largest holiday celebration in Newark, this year’s festivities began at 4:00 pm and at 6:00 pm Anthony McMillan, CEO of the NDD, Hugh Weber, President of New Jersey Devils, and the Honorable Mayor, Ras J. Baraka lit the 40-foot-tree after the crowd’s countdown. Following the tree lighting, TruSoL took the night away singing famous holiday jingles like “Silent Night” and “Last Christmas."
Thanks to the collaboration of the City of Newark, Newark Police Department, Newark Public Schools, and the area charter schools, the NDD was able to successfully invite and engage Newark families, resulting in a great turnout and a night of fun-filled holiday cheer!
