New Eats in Downtown Newark

By the end of March, we will officially enter Spring. For most Newarkers, this means coming out of winter hibernation and finding new and interesting places to have lunch, or an after-work drink with friends and colleagues.

We here at the Newark Downtown District love this time of year! We encourage those who work, live, or visit Newark to try some of the new eateries that have moved into our diverse and fun downtown.

Here are three new casual dining spots that are a must try if you’re taking in a show at the Prudential Center  or NJPAC, looking for a great happy hour, or just out shopping on Broad Street.

Backed by basketball powerhouse, Lebron James, Blaze Pizza (691 Broad Street, Newark, NJ), is a super-fast personal pizza restaurant that has become a mid-day staple for those who work in downtown Newark. Hungry pizza-lovers create their own pizza, choosing from classic or gluten-free dough, red, spicy or white-cream sauce, eight kinds of cheeses, and an array of meats, veggies, and even specialty drizzles.

The generously-sized personal pizzas are cooked in an open-flame oven where the pies are ready to eat in just 180-seconds.  If you’re in a rush, order online and pick up your pizza without waiting in line. Perfect for lunch, all of their pizzas are under $8.

Novelty Burger & Bar (214 Market Street, Newark, NJ) is a classic American burger joint inspired by the charm and sophistication of the 1950s. Named after the old Novelty Grill & Bar, a once-popular hotspot for the who’s who of Newark, this restaurant takes pride in integrating remnants of historic Newark back onto Market Street.  Novelty Burger & Bar offers unique sodas, hand-cut French fries, signature burgers, desserts, and cocktails.

Just as the name suggests, BURG (Military Park, Newark, NJ) serves specialty beef, chicken, tuna, and veggie burgers starting at just $8.50. From the Korean, with kimchi relish, spicy gochujang mayo, fried egg and a cucumber-scallion slaw to the Cowboy, topped with roast beef, barbecue sauce, griddled onions, and lettuce, there is something for everyone. If you’re not in the mood for a burger, try their Buffalo-style pork riblets, crispy broccoli, fried pickles, or Kale salad. For dessert, you can try the soft serve, donuts with cinnamon sugar, or the coffee float with maple bourbon ice cream.

For those who are looking for a beautiful after work, outdoor dining experience, BURG offers seating within Military Park starting in the Spring, and a happy hour from 4 pm to 7 pm, featuring eight beers on tap, and eight wines by the glass.
